Working on this Frida Kahlo oil painting brought me immense joy—it became something deeply personal. Frida Kahlo’s life story alone can send shivers down your spine, especially if you're familiar with empathy and human resilience. Beyond that, a meaningful bond naturally formed between me and the owners of this piece, which added even more emotional depth to the experience.
While I can’t reveal all the hidden meanings behind the work for obvious reasons, I will say this: it’s exactly those unseen layers that made the painting truly special. Creating it felt almost magical. There’s something powerful about becoming someone’s hands, someone’s emotions—a tool for expressing the unspeakable. That feeling is something I’ve come to live for.
One interesting moment during the process stands out. I often “speak” with my artworks and give them space to reveal themselves. I wait, patiently, until the character on the canvas begins to speak to me—to guide me. In this case, Frida’s voice came through unexpectedly. Her lower back, like in her real life, ended up appearing damaged. I didn’t plan it—it simply happened. As I layered paint in search of the right floral composition, it suddenly felt like she was screaming, “Show my back!”
Because of the underlying textures, her back developed this beautifully broken, scar-like surface. Scars she wore with pride throughout her life.
Another element I loved was the horizontal format we chose from the very beginning. It came naturally, yet felt bold. Frida is almost always portrayed vertically in most paintings we know. So laying her down brought both joy and challenge. It felt as though we were creating something genuinely new and uniquely our own.
I am deeply thankful for the trust and opportunity I was given—to bring this vision to life. Thank you my dears S&S for your deep understanding, support, and belief throughout the entire creative journey.
Please note: Colors may vary slightly in real life due to differences in screen settings and lighting. The photo cannot fully capture the exact hues and texture of the original painting.
